- Notes:
- Robert Smith (1792-1882) of Dirleton, Haddingtonshire, became captain of the 44th (East Sussex) Regiment in 1825 and retired in 1832. Around 1825 or 1826, while serving in India, he drew the Indian fashions contained in the present manuscript, which were published, with a descriptive text, as: Asiatic costumes, a series of forty-four coloured engravings, from designs taken from life with description to each subject (London: R. Ackermann, 1828).
Bound in contemporary gilt-tooled morocco, with gilt edges.
Original watercolor illustrations for Robert Smith's Asiatic costumes (published London: R. Ackermann, 1828), together with nine additional illustrations and 18 pages of manuscript text not included in the published version. The original illustrations and additional material are integrated and bound with the published version of the text, which in this copy lacks all lithographed plates, with Smith's original watercolors inserted in their place. A manuscript title page precedes the printed title page, reading: Asiatic costumes drawn by Captn. R. Smith 44th. Regt, 1826. The additional manuscript material immediately follows the conclusion of the published text, and continues the same format, with full-page illustrations of Indians of various ethnicities or occupations, along with several pages of amateur sociological observations describing each figure depicted. The final two items describe the palanquin (a covered sedan-chair) and the bujra, a sluggish boat used for navigating the Ganges. The manuscript text is a fair copy, in pen and brown ink. All of the additional material appears to be unpublished.
The additional (unpublished) figures are as follows: 45. Female at her toilet -- 46. Girl carrying flowers -- 47. Country girl gathering fuel -- 48. Bengalee carrying her infant -- 49. Girl carrying water from the Ganges -- 50. Mushal-chee, or torch bearer -- 51. Dhobee, or washerman -- 52. Palanquin -- 53. Bujra. - Subject Terms:
