Notes:
Robert Smith (1792-1882) of Dirleton, Haddingtonshire, became captain of the 44th (East Sussex) Regiment in 1825 and retired in 1832. Around 1825 or 1826, while serving in India, he drew the Indian fashions contained in the present manuscript, which were published, with a descriptive text, as: Asiatic costumes, a series of forty-four coloured engravings, from designs taken from life with description to each subject (London: R. Ackermann, 1828).
