Notes:
Embroidered sampler inscribed "Rose Hannah Hinds finished this work in the ninth year of her age, March 4, 1840." The sampler includes, from top to bottom: the letters of the alphabet and numbers 1-12 arranged in a pyramid; two stanzas of verse; and the image of a red brick house. The sampler is framed by a border of honeysuckle. Various plant and animal forms fill the margins, including strawberries, flowers, birds, foxes, a dog, and a chicken.
The first verse was commonly copied in samplers: "Next unto God dear Parents I address / Myself to you in humble thankfulness / For all your care and charge on me bestow'd / And means of learning unto me allowed." The verse may have first appeared in editions of William Mather's primer The young man's companion, in the late 17th century. The second stanza of verse is from Mary Master's 18th-century hymn, "Let's walk in the light": "Tis religion that can give / Sweetest pleasure while we live / Tis religion must supply / Solid comfort when we die."
