- Notes:
- The firm of John Hardman & Co. (founded in 1838, in Birmingham) was a leading manufacturer of stained glass and ecclesiastical fittings from 1844 to 2008. In its early years, the firm collaborated with A.W.N. Pugin, prospering during the Gothic Revival. John Hardman Powell (1827-1895) -- nephew of the firm's founder -- married Pugin's daughter Anne in 1850. From 1849 until his death in 1895, Powell served as chief designer for the firm. In 1883 the metalwork unit of the firm split off under the name Hardman, Powell & Co. In 1970 the Hardman & Co. studio suffered a major fire and much of their archive was destroyed; a few of the examples in the present volume show some fire damage and presumably were rescued from that disaster.
Bound in quarter green cloth, with brass and copper buckles and leather straps.
Album of 228 designs featuring the work of John Hardman & Co., Hardman, Powell & Co., and John Hardman Studios, with related illustrations of stained glass windows and ecclesiastical fittings, ca. 1850-ca. 2000. The designs include original drawings and printed illustrations. Drawings are executed in varied media, with pen and ink, graphite, and watercolor. Printed illustrations include engravings, aquatints, lithographs, and modern offset printing. All designs are accompanied by the label of the firm, printed in red on lozenge-shaped paper. Images not depicting stained glass include church doors, chalices, assorted tracery, and a number of patterns printed with gold.
Few designs are accompanied by notes until the end of the volume, where annotations more frequently record church names, dates, and dimensions. In the front portion of the album, two designs are signed by Donald B. Taunton. A window for Barham Church, Kent, is signed by Arthur E. Buss. Though most designs are undated, some clearly date to the later years of Hardman's activity. A vestry window for Areley Kings, for example, includes a dedication to "Geoffrey Mapp, 1900-1972". Designs proposed for the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital are signed "John Hardman Studios, D. Williams 1988." Two designs near the end of the volume are dated 1993 and 1995, respectively.
The middle portion of the album Includes a number of designs lithographed by Vincent Brooks after John Burley Waring, at least some of which are from Examples of stained glass, fresco ornament, marble and enamel inlay, and wood inlay (London, 1858). - Subject Terms:
