Notes:
The firm of John Hardman & Co. (founded in 1838, in Birmingham) was a leading manufacturer of stained glass and ecclesiastical fittings from 1844 to 2008. In its early years, the firm collaborated with A.W.N. Pugin, prospering during the Gothic Revival. John Hardman Powell (1827-1895) -- nephew of the firm's founder -- married Pugin's daughter Anne in 1850. From 1849 until his death in 1895, Powell served as chief designer for the firm. In 1883 the metalwork unit of the firm split off under the name Hardman, Powell & Co. In 1970 the Hardman & Co. studio suffered a major fire and much of their archive was destroyed; a few of the examples in the present volume show some fire damage and presumably were rescued from that disaster.
