- Francis Frith is best known for his landscape and architectural photographs of the Middle East in the 1850s and early 1860s. His company, based in Reigate, Surrey, went on to create and promote one of the most extensive offerings of photographic views from Great Britain, Europe, North Africa, India and America over the following decades and was one of the most successful photographic companies in the world. Some of the company's albums and series of mounted prints appeared under this title "Frith's Photo-Pictures" in the late 1860s, with a subtitle denoting which country or region was the focus of interest (e.g. Gernsheim, Incunabula, nos. 395 "English Scenery," 396 "The Lake District" and 438 "Dovedale").

Album of 24 albumen prints, each with the blind stamp "Frith's Series," numbered in graphite from 3346 to 3370 on the verso or on the mounts. Each print is loosely inserted by corners only in pre-cut paper mounts. The images depict birds and, occasionally, rabbits, squirrels, and fish in posed naturalistic settings. Several of the birds and squirrels are taxidermied and posed as if alive--taxidermy was still a developing field in mid-nineteenth-century England--though most of the animals appear not to be; they are dead, and left lying on the ground without any life-like arrangement. Some of the images, specifically the ones including rabbits and fish, are staged to resemble collections of game after a hunt: in one a fishing rod is visible, in another a large basket. Some of the birds--lying on the ground, lifeless--are placed next to nests of eggs. In isolated instances, different animals confront one another, such as a squirrel facing a bird.
