- "Fascinated by the human activity of categorising species, I became interested in the cases of Lepidoptera amassed duing the Vicorian era. In these the moths and butterflies are typically pinned and labeled in neat rows. In my own work I imagined these creatures coming back to life and trying to escape from the case. The result is a frenzied mass of moths hitting the glass as the compete with each other towards the light."--Artist's statement.
"The woodgrain effect paper that covers the boxes is my own printed paper. It originated from a rubbing of the floorboards in my studio and I think of it as having more of the character in a real and also graphic way than actual wood. A constant source of inspiration for me is Max Ernst's suite of frottages entitled Histoire Naturelle. I also have a strong memory from childhood of a fascination for a small set of cardboard stationery drawers that my grandparents kept in their office. The drawers were covered in a brown printed woodgrain effect paper similar to the paper I use."--Artist's statement.
"The woodland boxes are partly inspired by the museum cases made to show off nineteenth century taxidermy collections that I saw as a child. In these a model of a natural scene is created and staged with an example of each species. I found these both strangely natural and unnatural. I also saw them in a poetic way imagining how the creatures might live in harmony away from the human gaze."--Artists's statement.

Box featuring a crowded multitude of cut-paper moths, each moth held aloft from the base of the box by discrete stems of various heights. Each moth is hand printed. The sides of the box are covered in wood-grained paper, designed by the artist. The box top is glass. - Subject Terms:
