- Etloe House was built ca. 1760 for Edward Rowe Mores, antiquary and printer, and subsequently served as residence for Cardinal Wiseman. John Simonds owned Etloe House until his death in 1891. The London Gazette of February 23, 1900, notes: "... John Simonds, late of Etloe House, Leyton in Essex, Staplehurst in Kent, and Pear Tree Farm Wissett in Suffolk, butcher and meat salesman who died on the 7th day of December 1891 ..."
The temperance society known as the International Organisation of Good Templars originated in Utica, New York, in 1850. In 1868, the first IOGT gathering in Europe took place in Birmingham, England.
"I.O.G.T. Middlesex Convention. The committee have much pleasure in handing the accompanying balance sheet to you, sir, with their thanks for the use of the grounds; trusting that it you grant the use of the same next year for a like fête, the proceeds may realize the desired sum of £100, and that it will go to relieve suffering humanity, as also to demonstrate the fact, that alcohol is not needed either in health or sickness."--Panel [4].
Unique keepsake prepared for John Simonds, owner of Etloe House, Leyton, as thanks for allowing a bank holiday fête to be held in his grounds on August 4th, 1879, for the benefit of the International Organisation of Good Templars. It forms a balance sheet for the event, printed on silk and set within three hinged panels, each padded, and surrounded by a decorative lace and silver frame, with dark green ribbed silk ribbon borders. All four interior panels are printed letterpress (on silk). The front and back outer covers are decorated with floral watercolors on thin panels of ivory, which are in turn framed by leaf designs in white silk, attached just by their stems (a few of which are now missing).
The ledgers record receipts and expenditures of £107/9/10. They are signed by: H. Belstead, treasurer; G. Beament, chairman; F.T. Gardner, secretary; and Jon. King and H. Norgate, finance committee. - Subject Terms:
