Etloe House was built ca. 1760 for Edward Rowe Mores, antiquary and printer, and subsequently served as residence for Cardinal Wiseman. John Simonds owned Etloe House until his death in 1891. The London Gazette of February 23, 1900, notes: "... John Simonds, late of Etloe House, Leyton in Essex, Staplehurst in Kent, and Pear Tree Farm Wissett in Suffolk, butcher and meat salesman who died on the 7th day of December 1891 ..."
