C. R. Cockerell completed the interiors of St. George’s Hall in Liverpool after the death of the building’s architect, H. L. Elmes. Completed in 1854, the monumental building served as a concert and assembly room and is recognized as a masterpiece of nineteenth-century neoclassicism. This elevation shows a single bay of the barrel-vaulted Great Hall, revealing the room’s splendid interior decoration beneath the bold coffered ceiling. An ornately carved door is flanked by classical sculpture and hanging swags. Giant Corinthian columns front stone piers supporting a round-headed arch. The spandrels of the arch are decorated with allegorical figures of Music and Justice. Gallery label for installation of YCBA collection, 2014
