While L. S. Lowry would become famous for his industrial townscapes (one of which is shown alongside), his earliest surviving work, made at the age of fourteen, is a simple pencil drawing of yachts. This was made at Lytham St. Annes, a resort combining Lytham and St. Annes-on-Sea on Lancashire’s Fylde coast near Blackpool, then a popular holiday destination for residents of the large industrial cities of northwest England. Lowry enjoyed vacations there as a child and remained attached to the region for the rest of his life. This subtle coastal view made when Lowry’s reputation was at its height is derived from the same landscape that inspired his earliest drawing as a child.
