Little is known of G. B. Gething except that he lived in Newport, Wales, and was an ensign in the First Newport Rifles. In the mid-1850s he was a member of the Photographic Society Club, an organization of enthusiasts who paid ten shillings a year for membership. The club operated an annual exchange in which each member sent the secretary a photograph in as many prints as there were members. The secretary would then send all participating members the entire collection of prints with details of who took each photograph, when, where, and with what equipment. This was Gething’s submission for 1855, a year in which forty-four members participated, including Roger Fenton, whose work is shown nearby. Gething has captured a small cascade on the river Neath in South Wales, an area known for its waterfalls. The club was disbanded in 1858.
