Despite a youthful passion for art, Adrian Jones followed family pressure and trained as a veterinarian before serving as a soldier in Abyssinia, Ireland, and South Africa. It was only in 1882 that he finally fulfilled his ambition to train as a sculptor, by which time he was already in his late thirties. This rare model is one of his finest bronzes and earned him first prize in a statuette competition sponsored by the Goldsmiths’ Company in 1887. Gallery label for installation of YCBA collection, 2016
