Provenance:
Created by John Constable (1775-1837), the artist; possibly by descent to Charles Golding Constable (1821-1879), the artist's son; by descent to Charles Eustace Constable (1874-1899), Invercargill, New Zealand, the artist's grandson [1]; purchased by “Shepherd” from “Works of the late John Constable Sale” at Christie, Manson & Woods, London, England, April 16, 1896 (lot 71, ‘A Landscape, with cow’) [2] [a]; acquired by W. A. Kluger [3] [b]; acquired by Ronald Brymer Beckett (1891-1970) by 1956 [4]; purchased by John Baskett Ltd., London from Edward Speelman [5] [c], December 1969; purchased by Paul Mellon (1907-1999), January 1970 [d]; by whom given to the Yale Center for British Art, December 1976. Notes: --- [1] Christie, Manson & Wood’s April 16, 1896 auction catalog of Constable's work identifies this work as belonging to (Charles) Eustace Constable.--- [2] Probably Messrs. Shepherd Brothers. --- [3] Unclear when W. A. Kluger owned this work as no reference was found for this person. Reynolds does not list a gap of ownership between Kluger and Beckett. --- [4] Exhibited in Constable show, Manchester Art Gallery, 1956, catalog number 68. --- [5] Most likely acting on behalf of Ronald Brymer Beckett.
