Paul Mellon’s lifelong appreciation of the work of George Stubbs helped revive the artist’s reputation after long neglect and led Mr. Mellon to build the finest collection of Stubbs’s work anywhere in the world. This study of a foxhound is an extremely rare survival since most of Stubbs’s drawings vanished in the nineteenth century, sometime after his studio effects were sold by his widow. Captured in graphite with subtle control of tone, Stubbs’s foxhound relates to a soft-ground etching of the same subject that he worked on in 1788.
