In this watercolor Rowlandson celebrates Admiral Duncan’s victory over the Dutch navy at Camperdown on 11 October 1797, a victory which prevented the soldiers of Revolutionary France from landing in Ireland to aid an anti-British insurrection. Admiral Duncan took six Dutch ships captive and brought them back to the port of Great Yarmouth on England’s east coast. Rowlandson apparently hurried to the port to draw them as they were brought into berth, joining many others who crowded the streets to catch a glimpse of the naval heroes. A print after this drawing was issued just twelve days after the battle to cash in on the patriotic fervor.
