Kenneth Armitage was among the eight young British sculptors invited to exhibit at the Venice Biennale in 1952 (another was Lynn Chadwick, whose sculpture is shown nearby). In 1958, Armitage showed at Venice a second time—including a version of Triarchy—and won the David E. Bright Foundation Prize for a sculptor under forty-five. The show toured to other European museums and helped establish Armitage’s international reputation. Armitage went on to make a number of further works in which figures are melded together in a wall-like slab. This bronze is an edition from a plaster model that was used to develop a large-scale public sculpture. Gallery label for installation of YCBA collection, 2016
