Notes:
Sutton Courtenay Manor is situated near the banks of the River Thames in the village of Sutton Courtenay, Oxfordshire (formerly Berkshire), two miles south of Abingdon. The older parts of the manor date to the late 11th century (or earlier) and served as birthplace to the future Empress Matilda. In 1177, Henry II gave the manor to Reginald Courtenay, ancestor of the Earl of Devon. Subsequent occupants included the Earl of Devon's mother, the Brunce family, William, Lord Craven, William Monk, Baron Wantage, and Colonel H.E.A. Lindsay. The manor has been much altered and enlarged since its original construction.
