Notes:
Gervase Markham was the most prolific writer of works on animal husbandry of his time, and the author of numerous works on horses (each with substantial borrowings from the others). At one point, no less than five of his works were on the market at the same time, and Markham was forced to sign an agreement with the Stationers' Company promising not to write any more. His knowledge of horses prompted James I to commission him in 1620 to purchase a pure-bred Arabian charger on James's behalf; this is sometimes, although probably erroneously, credited with being the first horse of this breed seen in England.
