Notes:
"Emlyn's was not the first attempt to produce a 'British order' of classical architecture, but it was perhaps the most imaginative, a somewhat bizarre combination of classical forms with chivalric motifs such as the feathers and badge of the knights of the Garter. Each column of the order was split awkwardly into two shafts part way up, the point of division being decently draped in a wolf's skin bearing a Garter knight's shield and armour; the idea was inspired by the twin trees of Windsor Forest."--Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
