The stencils may have been used by a surveyor, chart-maker, or architect. The majority are accompanied by their original folded paper envelopes with a stencil made on the outside for easy identification. The stencil patterns include terms and phrases such as: in the County of; in the Township of; Plan referred to; side elevation; end elevation; plan; section; drawing no.; surveyed and drawn by. There are also stencils composed of individual strips of letters & numbers, scales, and one stencil for small trees.
