In 1841 the painter, writer, and inveterate wanderer Edward Lear began publishing illustrated journals of his travels. These works documented his experiences in Greece, Albania, Egypt, and other sites where imperial conflicts sometimes discouraged British visitors from lingering. Lear’s final publication of this kind, Journal of a Landscape Painter in Corsica (1870), recorded his impressions of “a world of pines” in Aïtone, Valdoniello, and Vico. He had spent the entire previous decade traveling throughout the Middle East and Mediterranean, returning to England less than once a year as he struggled to put down roots in Corfu and Italy. Lear sketched this scene in watercolor during May of 1868 and later completed the painting in London. Gallery label for installation of YCBA collection, 2016
