Inscribed on verso in graphite: "This picture was taken in Deal, on the Kent coast, the | day the Channel Tunnel opened. I'd been commissioned | by Colin Jacobson, editor of (the now long-gone) | 'Reportage' magazine; they'd later make a little booklet | to insert in the next issue to commemorate the event. | Colin had been very supportive of 'The Shipping Forecast' | during the early days, and asked me to convene | to work in the same manner, killing two birds | with one stone. | Soon after I took this I retreated to a local pub | to watch the historic meeting of the French and English | on TV. The other drinkers could hardly have | been less interested' the event might have been | a thousand miles away, rather than just a short | trip down the coast."; lower left: "This print was made to raise funds | for the student / alumni books | celebrating 21 years of photography | at the U.O.B. 2013"; lower center: "6/13"
