Created by John Constable (1776-1837), the artist; possibly by descent to his daughter, Isabel Constable (1822-1888); possibly bequest to her niece, Ella Nafeeseh Mackinnon (née Constable, 1865-1934); acquired by Ernest Alfred Colquhoun (1852-1930) [1]; possibly by descent to his son Gideon Robert Ernest Colquhoun (1888-1951); by descent to his wife, Gwendoline Eoith Colquhoun (née Parker, born 1902) [2]; purchased at auction by P. & D. Colnaghi & Co., at Sotheby’s, London, England, July 15, 1964 (lot 112, 'Hampstead Heath at Sunset looking toward Harrow') in "Fine English eighteenth and nineteenth century drawings and paintings" [a]; purchased by Paul Mellon (1907-1999), 1965 [b]; by whom given to the Yale Center for British Art, December 1981.[c]

Notes:
[1] Leslie Parris and Ian Fleming-Williams propose a provenance "presumably from Isabel Constable's heirs by gift or sale to Ernest Alfred Colquhoun; by descent to Mrs. G. Colquhoun," in Constable (London: Tate Gallery, 1991), 222, https://archive.org/details/constable0000parr/page/222. Graham Reynolds notes "many of the works bequeathed by Isabel Constable to her niece Ella" came into the possession of the attorney, actuary, and manager of an insurance company Ernest Alfred Colquhoun, in The later paintings and drawings of John Constable (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1984), 1:25, https://collections.britishart.yale.edu/catalog/orbis:582470. Many of these were exhibited at Grosvenor Gallery in 1889, and/or sold anonymously by Colquhoun at Christie's in 1891. Parris suggests the YCBA's picture might have been cat no. 269 "Harrow from Hampstead Heath (Sunset)" at the Grosvenor show. See A Century of British Art, (London: Henry Good & Son, 1889), 106, https://hdl.handle.net/2027/gri.ark:/13960/t5v73275v?urlappend=%3Bseq=106. Reynolds does not invoke Isabel, Ella, or Ernest Alfred in his version of this provenance.

[2] This is the provenance mentioned by Graham Reynolds. Also Sotheby's sold the work as "The property of Mrs. G. Colquhoun." Working backwards reveals a Gwendoline Colquhoun was the second wife of Ernest Alfred's firstborn son Gideon Robert Ernest Colquhoun. Ernest Alfred died with effects totalling £89,786, so it is plausible the work passed by descent in the family. Probate went to Gideon and younger brother Edgar Edmund. Edmund's wife was an Elizabeth Makin, making Gideon and Gwendoline the likeliest inheritors.
