The American artist John Singer Sargent was well over sixty when he went to France in 1918. He made a series of drawings at a casualty clearing station, where scores of men were being treated from the effects of mustard gas. These studies would no doubt have provided a resource for his famed monumental painting from 1919, Gassed, which depicts the aftermath of a mustard gas attack.
