John Constable matured slowly as an artist, and his early years were marked by hard work to achieve his ambition to become a painter. In the early 1800s, Constable was a student at the Royal Academy Schools, and in 1808, when he made this drawing, he was still attending the life classes despite being over thirty years old. The model is believed to be the Royal Academy porter, Samuel Strowger, who regularly sat for life classes and was reportedly “the most symmetrical of models in the Life School.” Gallery label for A Decade of Gifts and Acquisitions (Yale Center for British Art, 2017-06-01 - 2017-08-13)
