Inscribed, in artist' hand, verso: "These Eight Sketches, by David Wilkie, on facsimiles|of his finished pictures, following, namely (1.) the only child. (2.) the Jews Harp. (3.) The Cut finger|(4.) Blind Man’s Buff (5.) the Rent day|(6) the Scotch piper (7.) the prie-dieu (8.) Wilkie’s own portrait|and were made by him when growing into Celebrity as|an artist, - and sent by him, - as an Exemplar of his Success|to his Brother Captain Wilkie (of the Indian Army) then|resident in India: and the Group of Sketched passed after Captain Wilkie’s death, to his Brother Officer, Captain|Smith, and derivatively from Captain Smith, to his Brother George Smith, the Eminent painter. | See Memoranda affixed to the back of the Group of|Sketches but concealed by the present wood backing"
