Lettered inside plate, lower left: "Percy Thomas 1897- The Temple Church Published at 47 Queen's Road and 8 Clare Street Bristol by Frost & Reed Dec. 1st 1897"; lettered on verso, center: "CHOIR OF THE TEMPLE CHURCH | THE view is taken from the Round Church, looking through the | Central Arch. As recorded in the Introduction, this portion | of the Building is some fifty years later than the Round, and was consecrated on Ascension Day, 1240. | "The Middle and Aisles correspond in height, and afford a | most beautiful and finished example of the Lancet, or Early English | style." A complete restoration of the Church in 1840-43 removed | the accretions of centuries and exhibited the outlines of the building | in something of their primitive beauty. The clustered columns which | support the roof are of Purbeck marble, and were then disencumbered | of the paint and plaster, as well as from the monumental tablets which | disfigured them. The high pews were taken down, and the pulpit | removed from the end of a central avenue to the position at the side | which it now occupies. The Choir has twelve Lancet windows, with | three lights each. Full and detailed particulars of the Church can | be learned from Judge Baylis's admirable 'Guide to the Temple | Church' "
Signed in graphite, lower left: "Percy Thomas"
