...The Enemy, not withstanding the incredible loss they had sustained in the Battle of Blenheim, in the Year 1704, being in the begining of the Year Superior to the Allies, both in Spain, Italy, Germany, and Flanders, ventured out of their Lines under the command of Marshal Villeroy, with a design (as it seemed) to attack the Confederate Army, before it was assembled; but were prevented by ye usual vigilance and Conduct of his Grace the Duke of Marlborough, who marched up to 'em with such Expedition, & attacked them with such Vigour at the Village of Ramellies, yet in less than two hours they were entirely defeated, & were that night pursued above 4 Leagues beyond the field of Battle, with ye loss of all their Cannon, Ammunition, & Baggage, & desertion of above 20,000 of their men: In this Action the Duke of Marlborough's Gentleman of ye Horse was Shot close by his Side, when he was remounting his Grace upon a fresh Horse, by this Battle were gained ye whole Provinces of Brabant, & Flanders, The Towns Louvain, Bruxelles, Mechlin, Lier, Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges, Damme, Oude nard and Courtray, surrendering immediately; and Ostend, Menin, Dendermond, and Aeth, being besieged, and taken the same Campaign.
