The Grand National, run at Aintree outside Liverpool, is the most prestigious British steeplechasing event. In 1919 the winner was the favorite, Poethlyn, shown here in the center of the composition. Paul Mellon admired Alfred Munnings as the modern successor to the great sporting artists of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He bought Saddling Up for the Grand National, 1919 and its preparatory sketch at opposite ends of his collecting career, the sketch in 1954 and the large picture in 1989. They hung with fifteen other paintings by Munnings, as well as a number of drawings, in the conference room at his New York office. Malcolm Warner Warner, Malcolm and John Baskett.
