This sketch represents three prominent personalities at Newmarket Racecourse, then, as now, the most prestigious racecourse in the world. From left to right they are: John Hilton, the respected judge of Newmarket races from 1776 until his retirement in 1806; John Fuller, Clerk of the Course; and John Stevens, a prominent trainer. The sketch was commissioned from Benjamin Marshall by Augustus Henry Fitzroy, third Duke of Grafton (1735–1811), a prominent Whig politician and former prime minister. The duke was a noted racing enthusiast with a successful record of breeding and training horses.
