It is possible that Jacques-Laurent Agasse made this spirited study in preparation for a life-size painting of a fox in 1813. The partial outline of another animal in the upper right suggests that this has been cut from a larger work. Agasse lists various paintings of a fox in his manuscript record book between the years 1813 and 1840.
