The Austrian-born Joseph Edgar Boehm settled in London in 1862 and soon established himself as Queen Victoria’s favorite sculptor. Boehm’s continental and more naturalistic style of sculpture was a decisive influence on his contemporaries, and he effectively introduced British audiences to the animalier sculpture common in France— particularly equestrian bronzes and genre subjects such as this young girl riding her pony.
