During his lengthy career in India, Colonel Robert Smith served as an architect, archaeologist, painter, and military engineer. As Garrison Engineer at Delhi, Smith was responsible for the preservation of some of the city's ancient monuments, including the Purana Qila, or "'old fort."' This structure had been built in the sixteenth century, and continued to be used as a fort under British control.
