Kearns, 32 University Street, Montreal, Quebec, April 2-3, 1948 (lot 430), in "An important auction sale of a very valuable collection of fine oil paintings" [3] [b]; by descent to his wife, Lily Ramm (née Wolfson) (1898-1996), Los Angeles, California; purchased by Paul Mellon, 1979 [c]; by whom given to the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, December 1981 [d].

[3] A receipt on Leslie Lewis letterhead for the painting states verbatim that Ramm purchased the work in the 1948 "art auction" at Walter M. Kearnes. Lewis and Kearnes were in business.
