"A unique and highly interesting volume which contains a collection of original drawings by Captain Parr [i.e. Frederick Parr, 1806-1871], together with a number of proof plates of illustrations printed for 'Memoirs of the life of the late John Mytton, Esq.,' which was published by Ackermann in 1835. Parr was evidently disappointed by Apperley ("Nimrod") the author, and claims to have been the originator of most of the illustrations, being assisted by T.J. Rawlins who supplied the figures. According to the title [of the present work], Parr not only provided sketches taken from nature but also many authentic anecdotes. At the end of a biographical notice of Mytton he states that he forwarded a design for the title, together with twelve other illustrations to Apperley for insertion in the second issue of the 'Memoirs,' conditionally that certain exclusions were to be made, a reservation which was unhandsomely ignored. A mystery attends this statement because the eighteen plates included in the second edition are inscribed by Henry Alken and Rawlins without any mention being made of Captain Parr. The plates were undoubtedly drawn by Alken who probably benefitted by the captain's suggestions."--Schwerdt.
