Manuscript sketchbook of original cartoons, caricatures, and drawing exercises, by an unidentified British artist. The sketchbook appears to date to just before World War I. The drawings are executed in pen and black ink (most frequently) or in graphite; a small number are embellished with watercolor. Some are unfinished.
Political drawings include: several cartoons with anti-German sentiments, including the title illustration; "Fail! Columbia!", which is critical of American neutrality; "With the enemy: meeting of the Committee of Union and Progress in Constantinople"; a comic portrait of Asquith and Balfour. Many of the remaining drawings depict domestic scenes of a lightly humorous nature. There are also a handful of portrait drawings, a drawing of a contemporary automobile, and small still lives of domestic objects. Also present are drawing exercises, including neatly-drawn alphabets in various styles, and samples of hatching. - Subject Terms:
