Manuscript exercise book (for penmanship) by Charles Norman, 1832. Writing is in pen and black ink throughout. The title page is executed in decorative capital letters. The four remaining leaves (with writing on rectos only) comprise writing samples in a very neat cursive hand. Also loosely inserted is a single leaf, "Specimens of writing by Charles Norman, Christmas, 1833"; the remainder of this exercise book is not present.
The writing samples consist of short moral adages, such as "No revenge is more heroic than that which torments envy by doing good" and "A man may have a thousand intimate acquaintances, and not a friend among them all. If you have one friend, think yourself happy." The final leaf includes six lines of verse from Pope's The Illiad of Homer, "Like leaves on trees, the race of man is found ..." - Subject Terms:
