Notes:
Porcelain plate bearing an image of two young ladies singing from a piece of sheet music. The same image was published as "The duet, from the collection of William Renshaw, Esq.” in Art Journal, 1862 (between pages 156 and 157). As in the published version, the present porcelain plate is signed by James Sant and Francis Holl. The image area is hand-colored with shades of black, red, and green
The porcelain support and the subject matter are evocative of lithophanes, three-dimensional translucent porcelain plaques which, when backlit, reveal a range of gray tones (corresponding to the thickness of porcelain). The present plate, however, does not have the three-dimensional molded quality of a typical lithophane. The texture present appears to have been achieved with an acid bite. It is also thicker (0.5 mm) than a typical lithophane. The thickness inhibits any effect of toning when backlit.
