Wright was elected as an associate of the Royal Academy in 1781, but when his name came up for election as an RA in 1783, he was rejected and Edmund Garvey elected. As a response, Wright planned a one-man exhibition which featured 25 representative portraits and landscapes, including "View of Gibralter during the Destruction of the Spanish Floating Batteries, 13 September 1782."
