BAC: British Art Center copy is bound in contemporary calf. Has extensive annotations by John Suther Williamson, who "was for some time superintendent of the Royal Military Repository, Woolwich, and prepared a new and extensive course of instruction in artillery, which formed the basis of the exercise of heavy ordnance and of all the miscellaneous instructions of the gunner for many years" (Cf. DNB). Williamson's annotations cover a variety of subjects relative to artillery, from the technical mathematics to the organization of artillery regiments, the components of gun metal, the quantities of gunpowder carried by wagons, the directions for loading guns with red hot shot, and the disposition of men using different guns and gun carriages. He also includes an explanation of the "effects and advantages which might be derived by firing case shot in the mode propos'd by Major Shrapnell" (p. 241) and a number of manuscript tables which show, for example, the various weights of different types of shot, the necessary charges of gunpowder for service, saluting and scaling, and the spaces between road ruts in different parts of Europe for the movement of artillery. All of the notes are written in pen and brown ink. Some are written in the margins, but the bulk are included on 74 pages inserted at back (numbered 217-290), which are densely filled with annotations.
