Elizabeth Jane Crompton was the fourth of ten children of Joshua Crompton of York (1754-1832) and Anna Maria Rookes of Esholt (1763-1819). In 1814, her sister Maria Anne Crompton married Henry Preston of Moreby, after which Elizabeth joined the newlyweds on a tour of Scotland. Manuscript album of 35 large graphite sketches of views in Scotland by Elizabeth Jane Crompton, made during a tour of the country in 1814. Most of the sketches feature natural scenery, including views of highlands, lochs, and falls on the river Clyde, as well as important castles and manors. All of the sketches are relatively finished; some have an application of light yellow wash. All of the sketches are captioned in graphite, either below the drawing or on the facing page. None is dated.
