The first leaf recto bears a woodcut coat of arms; at foot of verso: This present boke named the Shyp of folys of the worlde was translated i[n] the College of saynt mary Otery in the counte of Deuonshyre: out of Laten, Frenche, and Doche into Englysshe tonge by Alexander Barclay preste: and at that tyme chaplen in the sayde College. tra[n]slated the yere of our Lorde god. M.CCCCC.viii. Inprentyd in the cyte of London in Fletestre [sic] at the signe of Saynt George by Rycharde Pynson to hys coste and charge: ended the yere of our Sauiour M.d.ix. the. xiiii. day of December.

BAC: British Art Center copy 1 has the first leaf with Pynson's coat of arms and the final leaf bearing his device in collotype facsimile. Signature q is in a setting uniform with rest of book. This copy has the bookplates of William Proby, Earl of Carysfort, and William Marchbank. Bound by C. Lewis.
BAC: British Art Center copy 2 is a variant copy. Signature q has seven leaves, the first four signed q, qii, qiii, qiiii. Excised leaf (a blank) is q5. Leaves q1 and q8 (congugate) are in a setting that differs from rest of book: commas are used instead of slashes; roman type employs 'u' for 'v' in the lower case; 'et' for '&'. Line 1 of leaf q1v begins 'Wheder that' instead of 'Wherther [sic] that' as in copy 1, the original. This copy belonged to William Cavendish, Duke of Devonshire. Bound by C. Hering, with his ticket. "First published in German in Basel in 1497, Sebastian Brant's 'Narrenschiff,' or 'Ship of Fools,' was one of the most successful published works of its time. There was an immediate demand for it to be translated into other European languages. Alexander Barclay was responsible for the English version, which was printed by Richard Pynson in London in 1509. In an innovative move, Pynson used two typefaces for printing the work. He set Barclay's translation in Gothic, or black letter, type, whereas Brant's Latin text appears in roman - the first roman font to be used in England. The illustrations were copied from the woodcuts in the original Basel edition, many of which were by Albrecht Dürer. 'The Shyp of folys' describes a ship sailing for the 'fool's paradise' of Narragonia, and the passengers represent various types of vice or folly. Brant's translation gives a picture of contemporary English life: he targets ignorant book collectors, ungrateful children, inconstant and vain women, greedy merchants, corrupt lawyers and physicians, and undeserving beggars."-- Elisabeth Fairman.
