The prints include experiments with a variety of grains and surface treatments, the application of tint and the use of tone blocks to achieve a variety of effects, combined with manual work like heightening with white or touching up of details.

"As a gallery director, [Johann Christian von] Mannlich was a great educator with a real mission to promote an understanding and appreciation of the German schools of painting, and it was obviously with this in mind that he directed the publication of two sets of litographed reproductions ... [The first was Les oeuvres lithographiques, 1810-16] ... The second publication, Königlich Baierischer Gemälde Saal zu München und Schleifsheim, began to appear in 1817 as soon as the other work was completed. Two hundred paintings were reproduced, mainly by tinted lithography, but the plates were on the whole larger and more ambitious ... Piloty and Strixner again lithographed the pictures, but this time with the help of Jacob von Dorner, Dominicus and Lorenz Quaglio, and many others. These two publications were probably the most important lithographed works produced in Germany during the first part of the nineteenth century. As examples of tinted lithography they were far superior to anything that had been produced before, and they had a wide influence by virtue of their subject matter. In this respect as well they are important since they represent the first successful application of lithography to the reproduction of a collection of works of art."--Michael Twyman, Lithography 1800-1850.
