Original report for the holding of the open competition for designs for the new Royal Exchange building, for which 38 designs were submitted (exhibited in Mercers Hall). The assessors were Sir Robert Smirke, Joseph Gwilt and Robert Hardwick. Among those who submitted designs were C.R. Cockerell, James Pennythorne, and T.L. Donaldson. The premiums were awarded to William Grellier, Alexis de Chateauneuf, Arthur Mee, and Sydney Smirke. However the building was eventurally erected to the design of William Tite. - Subject Terms:
