Harris, E. British architectural books and writers, 190
English short title catalogue, N44388
"Consisting of I. The five orders, with general proportions. 2. Parts, as entablatures, capitals, bases, &c. on a large scale. 3. Mouldings, with their form and proportions, plain and ornamented. 4. The five orders adapted to doors, gates, intercolumniations, &c. 5. Windows, pediments, ballusters, &c. 6. Cielings, pannels, &c. 7. Chimney pieces, vases, &c. 8. Sections, alcoves, &c. 9. Spandrells, brackets, &c. 10. Frames, masks, rosets, &c. As no book of architecture yet published contains so great a variety of new and useful designs, the utility of this work to every artist, or manufacturer, whose profession can be aided by decoration, will sufficiently appear on observing that the knowledge of architectural proportion is not confined to buildings alone, but to whatever science they are applied, give the desired effect of strength and beauty. And are here so clearly laid down, as to be acquired from a slight application. The ornaments of architecture seem of equal antiquity with the art itself, as the remains of ancient buildings abound therewith, as well as the woks of the most celebrated moderns. Yet many authors content themselves with giving only the proportions and almost totally neglect the graceful addition of ornament. To supply which defect this work is principally intended. The designs for cielings, vases, frames, &c. are decorated in the most beautiful manner and will equally well serve for many other purposes, besides the uses to which they are here appropriated. Herein may be likewise found, a general system of ornament design."--Title page.
