Notes:
"This volume was published in 3 states: 25 copies in Imperial Quarto at ten guineas; 125 copies demy quarto at three and five guineas; 500 copies royal octavo at one and two guineas. ... The book bears the names of three printers, C. Muskett, Jaques & Son, and C. Whiting. Part 1 ends at p. 72, midway in Chapter. 4. The four chapters printed are given in the contents list, but at the end of the first chapter a further number are forecast, these, apparently, remaining unpublished. It seems that for some reason John Britton stopped writing his book at Chapter 4 and entrusted the remainder to T.E. Jones."--Abbey.
Steel engravings by Charles Edward Wagstaff, Edward Scriven, G.F. Storm, Robert Sands, John Charles Varrall, and Thomas Turnbull; after John Wood, Henry Edridge, Henry Hoppner Meyer, Henry Bone, Henry G. Gastineau, George Cattermole, Thomas Higham, John Martin, and William Faithorne.
Plates 3, 4, and 12 are engraved by J.H. Le Keux and make use of two intaglio plates, one carrying the subject, and the other the ground or tone. After drawings by James Robert Thompson, C.J. Richardson, and Thomas Allom.
Lithograph by F. Bedford; after John Britton.
Originally published in three parts, beginning in 1849. The title page for the completed work is dated 1850. Added engraved title page is dated 1849.
Part 1 includes "The Britton testimonial, an account of a public dinner given to John Britton ... 1846": xvi, [24] p., with separate pagination and register.
"Essays on the merits and characteristics of William Shakspere... " (pt. 3, p. [1]-48) has special title page.
"A chronological list of the literary works of John Britton": pt. 3, p. [185-192].
