For housing, the set is accompanied by two contemporary boxes covered in wood-grained paper, bearing printed labels "I. Riva de Schiavoni, Figures" and "Life in Venice, Piazetta, No. 1"
The present set is mentioned in an advertisement by Trentsensky in the Wiener Zeitung of December 30, 1854.
The set resembles contemporary toy theaters, but without connection to a dramatic work. It comprises two variant views of the Piazza San Marco and the Riva degli Schiavoni, in Venice. The elements of scenery are lithographically printed, with hand-coloring. Components include: six back-drop boards, depicting prominent building fronts including the Torre dell'Orologio and the Palazzo Ducale; two sheets painted to represent water; eight segments of walkway or dock; and 169 figures or objects mounted on small wooden bases. Free-standing pieces include the Campanile di San Marco, flagpoles, buoys, and small boats or gondolas, with passengers. Figures are represented as individuals or in groups, with depictions of tradespeople, musicians, mummers, carnival goers, and sailors. Twenty-five pieces are present in duplicate.
Many pieces bear printed numbers, presumably keyed to an accompanying text (not present).
One of the six back-drops depicts a row of anchored ships, including two steamers (one named as the Franz Joseph).
