The owner or compiler of the present commonplace book was probably the Mary Ann Gibbs baptised on December 17, 1848, at Leamington Priors, Warwickshire (to parents John and Mary Palmer Gibbs). Her sister Jessie Palmer Gibbs was baptised on the same date. See: Warwickshire, England, Church of England Baptisms, 1813-1910.

Bound in contemporary dark red morocco.
Manuscript commonplace book compiled for Mary Ann Gibbs, of Leamington, England. The volume is inscribed at front: "Presented to Mary Ann Gibbs, on her birthday, by her affectionate sister, Jessie Palmer Gibbs. August 4th, 1862." Entries, mostly verse, are interspersed on 43 pages of the volume, some signed and dated (from 1862 to 1877) by Jessie Palmer Gibbs, or with initials. Verse titles include "A Birthday Wish," "Industry, "The Parting," "Separation," "A Blessing," "The Silent Tear," "Our Friendship," "To Mary Ann," "Home," "I Never Can Forget Thee," and "The Pensive Enthusiast."
The volume is also illustrated with a small number of engravings (Kenilworth Castle, Shrewsbury) and original albumen prints from travels in Devon (River Torridge, Lynemouth, Ivy Bridge Church).
