The collection includes a large variety of shell types, from 5 mm to 7 cm in length. The shells are stored in a contemporary circular box divided into thirteen compartments. The box bottom and interior are lined with turquoise paper; the exterior face with black paper, trimmed with gold. The collection was probably intended as material for the making of shellwork.
The box is accompanied by heavy brown paper used to enclose the box during transport. It is addressed, in black ink: "Shells. The Honble. Mrs. Ramsay, Great Hadham, Herts." - Subject Terms:
